Daft Punk have finally announced the anticipated follow-up to 2010’s Tron soundtrack – a 13 track full length LP called Random Access Memories. It’s going to be released by Daft Life, an imprint on Columbia Records, on May 21st. Start counting down.

If you’re enough of a fanboy/fangirl, you can preorder the album on iTunes here even though there’s no tracklist yet. It has been reported before that Giorgio Moroder, Nile Rodgers and Animal Collective‘s Panda Bear may appear on the album.

To keep yourself busy until May 21st, you can either listen to the SNL commercial for the hundredth time, or go through a visual history of Daft Punk’s helmets, from The Stool Pidgeon, or listen to The Hood Internet‘s mashup of the SNL commercial with Justin Timberlake‘s ‘Suit and Tie‘.

Justin TImberlake - Suit & TIe album artwork

Justin Timberlake‘s last album, Future Sex/Love Sounds was a pop masterpiece. Timbaland was just on fire then, making that album what it was. So, seven years down the road, here’s the second song to come out from his upcoming album The 20/20 Experience. Continue reading

The Weeknd – Enemy

As The Weeknd gears up for his November 13th first major label release, Trilogy, an official release of his breakthrough first three mixtapes, he has been busy creating new content. First releasing a symbolic video for ‘Rolling Stone’, and then a video ‘Wicked Games’, this new track, ‘Enemy’ has surfaced. It won’t be included on Trilogy, but seems to be just for the fans. I like the production, and it flatters his voice – but I don’t think it’s his strongest work. Distinctly the style that he’s defined for himself however.

Trilogy will include three new tracks: ‘Twenty Eight’, ‘Valerie’, and ‘Till Dawn (Here Comes The Sun)’. Check out ‘Enemy’  and make your decision below: Continue reading

Polaris Music Prize 2012

And from many….there were one. The Polaris Music Prize was started in 2006 to recognize the best full length Canadian album, solely based on merit. It has acted as a who’s who of Canada’s impeccable music scene, with past shortlisters including Arcade Fire (who took home the prize last year,) K’naanThe WeekndBroken Social Scene, and other great bands. This year’s crop was just as strong as ever. Below are the long list, then the short list nominees, then this year’s winner of the prize.

On an EDM note, here’s Swedish House Mafia‘s latest, and final track. Recently announcing that they were going to split up, the hype leading to this track has been massive. Released on Friday the fourteenth, the final track comes out after many radio rips and concert leaks.

This is one of those videos that actually adds to the emotion of the track. It shows just how massive rave culture has become, showing crowds of thousands all dancing as one to the music. Continue reading

Stigma, Sexism, Homophobia – The Music Industry

Life isn’t fair, society isn’t fair, but most of all, some parts of the music industry are wack. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Slowly, but surely, a tide is coming into shore that brings change. As I see it, there are three major stigmas in the music industry. Bias against women, the maintenance of being “thug”, and homophobia. Let’s dig in.

Sexism

The bias against women in the music industry has always been the one that’s interested me the most. How many times have you ever been chilling with your dude, a fella named ‘Chad’, let’s say, and when a song by a girl came on shuffle, he said “Softtttttt…”…and changed it? Let me tell you. When I hang out with Chad, it happens all the time. There’s something engrained in Western cultures that for some reason, it’s less cool for guys to listen to female singers. I straight up don’t get this at all. How on earth does the sex of the singer have any impact on how good the song is? Does it affect the chord structure, how well the instruments are played, how good the composition is? The answer: no, no it does not. Of course, this is a part of a much larger issue. It’s all a part of the problem starts with the prevalence of the word ‘bitch’ – a term that is essentially linked with females, yet so broadly used – and ends with slut shaming. A woman simply can’t do what is acceptable for a man without consequences. To this effect, here’s a song and a video. Lupe Fiasco‘s latest single, ‘Bitch Bad’ addresses the word. A pretty clever track – rapping with a lazy flow over a lazier trap beat, the exact style of which so much of what he mocks comes from. Check it:

ANT [Mixtape Download Link]

I recently came across this rapper on YouTube to keep things simple – He has good flow, good lyrics and most important (I personally think this can make or break any artist) he has great production quality.

ANT is a 22 year old musician from Seattle, WA. Known for his intricate lyrics and catchy rhyme schemes, he is not your typical rapper. What sets him apart from most rappers, is that he is known for telling elaborate and very relatable stories with his music. Rather than rapping about clubbing, sex, alcohol, and those typical hip hop subjects, ANT tells stories about lost love, growing up without a father, dealing with death, falling in love, and everything else he encounters in his life. He has been writing music all his life, but did not record his first song until 2006 and hasn’t stopped since. With the emergence of the YouTube scene, ANT has taken a step away from writing originals and focuses instead on writing remixes to popular songs. Always repping his hometown and never speaking about what he hasn’t been through, the truth of his rhymes are evident. Check out his official YouTube channel, subscribe, and enjoy!

Ellie Goulding – High For This (The Weeknd Cover)

Ellie Goulding + The Weeknd = Enough said. Worthy of a listen for that combo.  Don’t know if I was expecting a little bit more – the original has much more emotion and buildup. Pretty chill, works decent enough. Good night folks, this is late night music.

Bonus Harmonius:

Here’s a pretty sweet remix for the steppers.

Tons of shows lined up including Electro Beach, and that doesn’t stop him from dropping new ones. Here is a lengthy preview to what will be an instant hit when it is unleashed. Definitely does a sick job on this one. Also added another fire remix by DJ Kue.
