Cruel Summer [Album Review]

Kanye’s GOOD music collaborative is out, but does it deliver? The long anticipated album features some of the hits hip-hop fans loved through the summer, from chart-topping ‘Mercy’ to the aggressive ‘Cold’ and raw ‘New God Flow’. This album is best described by Yeezy himself, a “ghetto opera”. This is largely due to the pristine and energetic production of the songs. Credit goes to GOOD Music’s own Hit-Boy who cultivated the boppy beat of ‘Clique’ as well as the tantric flow on ‘Higher’. The album has a superb opening with ‘To the World’ which has some great vocals by R. Kelly backed up by thunderous production. However, as seen in the opening song and throughout the album, Kanye’s lyricism is not as good as his older work, but I also think this may be intentional. Pusha T delivers in his songs, as does Teyana Taylor. When I initially heard of this album, I thought this was going to be a treat for GOOD fans and a possible teaser for Kanye’s next solo album, along with the upcoming Pusha, Big Sean, and Kid Cudi albums. I think that was an accurate production, and this was a taste of better work to come. Overall this is still a great album and provides a great segway for future solo works from artists on the GOOD Music label.

Overall: 7.5/10

Creativity & Production: 8.5/10

Lyricism: 7/10
